1/20/2024 0 Comments Skylight projector 2.0This would be especially appealing when gifting it to adults, as it'd feel more like a premium product than a kids toy. The projector comes in a compact box which serves its purpose, but we think it could be slightly better designed so it doesn’t look quite so much like a cheap-ish toy. The advantage of this shape however is that it would easily slip onto a bookcase or small bedside table, not taking up much more room than a book. This is a bit limiting and means it isn't as easy to position, compared to a star projector like the Sega Homestar Flux. The unit is a very compact and light wheel shape with two 'support panels' (legs) which means you can either point the light and laser straight up to the ceiling or position it at more of a 45-degree angle. One is for power and to cycle through the default displays, one starts and stops rotation, and one adjusts the brightness (or turns the device off if you hold it down). There are three tactile buttons that could easily be felt in the dark if needed, they are not backlit but it doesn’t seem necessary for them to be. The default display on powering up is to turn every feature on. Sky Lite 2.0 buttons (Image credit: Tantse Walter)Īfter unboxing it doesn’t take long to get the Sky Lite 2.0 and get up and running.

I always prefer lifetime purchases if it’s something of value to me. The premium version starts at £25.00, or you can get the lifetime version at £45.00. The premium version though, is what really gives you the most power. There is both a free and premium version. However, I’ve found that these don’t work in every app, whereas snippets with the Alfred app do. Mac has keyboard text shortcuts built into the OS. Instead of looking that up each time, I simply use a snippet :htmlrightarrow. For example, when I’m writing a tutorial and instructing someone how to navigate down a menu, I always use the → HTML symbol. You can use Snippets for all sorts of things, such as frequently used sayings in an email or even to insert symbols. This works across the entire OS and other apps, it isn’t just a browser extension. For example, I can type  and it will automatically convert into □. I have hotkeys (or snippets as Alfred calls them) so that I can easily insert emojis as I write. One example, I use a lot of emojis when I’m writing and sharing on social media. You can use it to speed up all sorts of tasks that you do regularly on the Mac. The Alfred Mac app is all about productivity! If you’ve ever heard of a tool called TextExpander, this is that on steroids. I recently published one on how to easily cut a shape out of another shape. I also have a few Affinity Designer tutorials I’m working on. In Affinity Designer, you can find this under the “More” button when you go to export an image. Tip: For saving images for the web, the best color profile for Mac is sRGB IEC61966-2.1. It’s available from the developer’s website and the Mac App Store. And it’s not a subscription, this is simply a one-time purchase, and you get all the updates forever. The best part about Affinity Designer is that it only costs $49.99. Affinity Designer is by far the best Adobe Illustrator alternative I’ve ever found. The Creative Cloud costs $50+/month, and if I were to get Illustrator by itself, it would cost me $20+/month. But running a small business and having to pay for everything myself, was just too expensive. I have used Affinity Designer for 4+ years to create all of the images you see on this blog, as well as my other sites. Affinity Designer (premium, M1 optimized)Īffinity Designer is a vector graphics program developed by Serif for macOS. If you prefer something local that’s not on the cloud I also recommend the free MacPass app. □ 1Password 7 dark mode on Mac (Image source: 1Password) Many of us know how hard it is to get our parents to use best practices when it comes to online security. They also have a family plan available, which can be handy. Tip: One-time passwords, along with an authenticator app, are always safer than SMS.ġPassword’s personal plan costs $2.99 a month (billed annually). This is important to me as it means I spend less time grabbing my phone. It also supports one-time passwords, which means you can use it as a Google Authenticator alternative. The Mac App is beautiful, along with dark mode. I have used 1Password for years now and love it. And second, you should never use the same password twice, ever. Why is this important? First off, it helps to prevent from having to write them down anywhere. Most people these days are using some type of password manager. Some of these apps are also available for PC (Windows). Rosetta 2: Not optimized yet for Apple Silicon, but still runs via Rosetta 2. For those of you who don’t know, Apple takes a cut of the sale (30%) from developers when you use the App Store. This makes it super convenient to reinstall apps later down the road and saves a lot of time. While I always try to support developers where I can, I do prefer purchasing from the Mac App Store. The Mac apps below (listed in alphabetical order) consist of free and premium apps straight from the developer’s website and apps from the Mac App Store. So for most of my life, I’ve been knee-deep (more than most) in the Microsoft world of Active Directory, SharePoint, Exchange, etc. In 2013 I received the Microsoft MVP Award in the Windows Expert-IT Pro category. I switched to Macs back in 2018 after using PCs exclusively for over 20 years. Hopefully, you’ll find an awesome new Mac app or setting in this list that will help make your life easier! I’ve also included some of the tweaks and settings I change whenever I get a new Mac or reinstall macOS. So to keep from repeating myself over and over, I’ve compiled a list of what I think are the best Mac apps. Another reason for this post is that visitors, friends, and even family are always asking me which apps I use for specific tasks. 1/20/2024 0 Comments Signal mountain lodge addressWe ended up walking around the campground at night for fun and it was super nice. If you don’t want to stay in a cabin, you can stay in a campground on the Signal Mountain Lodge property. Signal Mountain Lodge Campground for Tents and RV camping We planned on sitting in chairs and watching the sunset on the porch but we ended up enjoying a glass of wine at the Trapper’s Grill at the lodge. The front porch had a small view of the lake. The cabin had two queen beds inside and front and back porches. We stayed in this cabin for around $250 for one night. It’s open May through October and you can book here. The Signal Mountain is the only lodge right on Jackson lake in the Tetons and the views are absolutely breathtaking. There was only one room available at the Signal Mountain Lodge in Wyoming a few weeks before the trip and I snagged it. Review of the Signal Mountain Lodge in Wyoming I do have a $40 credit for anyone who signs up for their first Airbnb stay using this Airbnb link, if it makes sense for your trip. It just didn’t make sense for us this trip. Note:The Airbnbs were definitely cheaper than the lodge though and would allow us to eat our meals in house and save money. We wanted to take advantage of every minute and stay in the park. Since we only had one day, we didn’t want to stay at an Airbnb outside the park and cut into our time in the park.We had guitars with us since we were just coming from a guitar festival in Bozeman, MT and my husband thought the guitars would get ruined if they were in the car in the hot weather if we camped. We decided to stay at Signal Mountain Lodge in the park for two reasons. We could stay at an Airbnb in Jackson and drive into the Park to explore. We could stay at a campground in Grand Teton. We had three choices of where to stay when we booked our trip: Where to Stay in Grand Teton National Park We visited in June and the weather was perfect. If you’re into photography and beautiful pictures, you’ll have a blast just driving around Grand Teton and snapping photos. We also pulled over to grab this shot of Jackson Lake. We also saw a bear!!īoth of these pictures were taken from our car. We took some beautiful pictures during our trip to Grand Teton. The photo above was taken behind Signal Mountain Lodge. I kept having to remind myself to “be in the moment” but I also wanted to capture the moment. I think I took over 200 pictures in 24 hours. The first thing I’ll mention is that the Tetons are so beautiful that you’ll probably be entertained just driving around and pulling over at the view areas. What to do in Grand Teton National Park in One Day Well, we can confirm YES it’s possible! We managed to have a blast in the Tetons in one day and loved our stay at Signal mountain lodge. My husband and I asked ourselves this before our road trip through Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming and Colorado this past month. Would it be possible to do Grand Teton National Park in one day? UFO featured a different style back then than other big, gifted bands employed. One of the best records of their career and undoubtedly the best of this specific period. In conclusion, Lights Out delivers real vintage Hard Rock with an edge. You know, special pants, garish colors and all. For example, Alone Again Or would have found a better home with The Beatles or gigs like Audience. Or it might have served as an entry into one of the infamous pop shows that were in fashion back in that time. There are – as always and very unfortunately – some fillers in this limited number of tracks. I listened to this track about a thousand times. And I kid you not, this track gets my system going alright after a night of heavy music and booze. A real early morning wake-up-and-get-your-breakfast song. Mystical, slow, but rock hard, expertly delivered and interpreted. And then, it’ll bring you back to reality with some wisdom about how a relationship can get lost in life. The latter tries to kill you with a super heavy, psychedelic, but extremely well-executed keyboard intro first. Yet, you can feel the emotions in Phil’s voice. The former talks about a relationship that – probably – never happened. Just Another Suicide contains a surprising riff that lightens up this track that would otherwise be bland.Īnd then there are the rock ballads Try Me and Love to Love. Too Hot to Handle and Lights Out always take me along a journey back to earlier days, still after all these years of listening to this record. But more’s the pity, he left the band (forcibly or not) more times than I care to count. If only this guy just would not have been such an ass on stage and elsewhere, they could have doubled their earnings and gotten to totally different levels in their career. They don’t make ’em this way anymore, unfortunately. All this is spiced up by rock ballads that we need to go look for these days first. The album Lights Out virtually bulges with stellar, vintage tracks, superb riffs ‘made by Schenker’, and powerful lyrics. Nor was their style blues-tinted and bleary-eyed from drug overuse as Led Zeppelin and their ilk of that time. Straight and true with a crunch, but not as hard-assed as AC/DC ever were. Lights Out gets you this special brand of Hard Rock with a sharp edge and Michael’s super-precise guitar play. Once out of UFO in 1978 for the first time, Schenker moved to found the Michael Schenker Group or MSG. That he never managed to stay for longer periods with the band is a pity. Other albums of that period were No Heavy Petting or – then again – Force It. The 1977 Lights Out is the fourth record of this series. Out of the nine albums recorded with UFO, five of them originated from this era. The first stint – the aforementioned Schenker years – were Michael’s longest continued and most productive engagement with the band. His personal issues, however, created enough dissent to have him hired and dismissed several times over many years. His talent undoubtedly helped UFO to shine on the international stage. Anecdotally, Michael’s brother Rudolf still plays for the Scorpions to this day. Michael’s relationship with UFO was spotty, though. Who better to choose than German-born Michael Schenker, a founding member of the Scorpions. Back in the ’70s, a super-gifted young lad, almost too young to be that good a guitarist, joined this band led by Phil Mogg in search of a riff maker. One of the best periods in the distinguished career of UFO are indisputably the Schenker years. They have created great, great Hard Rock over time and helped pave the way into what is today called metal. I admit, the British rock band UFO is one of my long-time favorites. 1/19/2024 0 Comments Medieval castlesShell keep castles were the improved defense system of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. However, despite stronger defenses, stone castles were still falling to invasion a better means of defense for the castles and their inhabitants had to be developed. The keeps had great halls, extensive kitchens, and bed chambers to accommodate the family and their guests. Stone castles with wooden fencing transformed into impressive structures showcasing the wealth and power of the noble families and rulers who lived there. Rochester Castle flickr photo by hugh llewelyn shared under a Creative Commons (BY-SA) license The initial baileys that were constructed of wooden stakes were replaced with stone as time went by.Ī stone built keep interior of the Rochester castle. This area also included space for villagers and domestic animals. A bailey (enclosed courtyard) surrounding the motte was constructed to secure the central area which housed the keep, great hall, chapel, and other important buildings. First, ditches were added to slow down the approaching invaders. Medieval castle designs changed to keep up with changing tactics and weapons of invaders, and later to reflect prestige and wealth. While invaders were struggling to get over the ditches and climb the mounds, bowmen at the top had the perfect opportunity to shoot arrows directly at the invaders. Additionally, while excavating rock and soil from the ground to strengthen and increase the size of the mound, a ditch was formed around it–making the mound even more difficult to access. The original natural mounds frequently had earth and rock added, to make them higher and steeper, and thus more difficult to climb. The effectiveness of the fortifications lay in the fact that the earthen mounds were difficult to ascend while arrows from the keep rained down on the invaders, whose returning arrows would just get stuck in the wooden palisades. Everything and everyone, skilled and unskilled, could participate in constructing this type of defense. The alarm was sounded when invaders were scouted preparing to besiege a village. Cardiff Castle flickr photo by michaelday_bath shared under a Creative Commons (BY-NC) license As their grasp on invaded lands became stronger, the Normans transitioned to stone keeps or castles to hold their lines and lands, which was the start of castles as we know them today.Ĭardiff Castle in Wales is an excellent example of the Norman architectural style. The Normans built their earliest fortifications of wood in the motte-and-bailey style. These noblemen were constantly at war with their local neighbors in an attempt to expand their own territory, but their methods of fortifications have not structurally survived history. This structure was known as the central keep by the time the motte-and-bailey structures developed it was part residence, part office, and part treasury.Īnglo-Saxon nobility operated on a feudal system, collecting taxes from their tenants. In medieval times, noblemen and kings at first built wooden structures to house their families, other nobles, and household guards on top of the mound, later called a motte. 3 Gothic Architecture: Tales of Ghosts and Ghouls.2 How Did They Build Castles in Medieval Times?.
In the comics, Eli is an original member of the Young Avengers who inherits his grandfather’s superpowers after a blood transfusion. In addition to introducing the MCU version of Isaiah Bradley (Carl Lumbly), the show introduces his teenage grandson Eli (Elijah Richardson). Could Torres fix up an old pair of Sam’s wings and take them for a spin in the future? In the comics, he eventually becomes the next Falcon after Sam becomes Captain America. The MCU’s Joaquin Torres (Danny Ramirez) is the tech-savvy soldier who worked on missions with Sam earlier in the season. We’ll have to wait and see what happens in the next episodes of Marvel’s latest TV series. In addition to seeing the proper passing of the Captain America mantle to Sam, “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” introduced a number of characters who have comic book superhero counterparts. His introduction in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was brief and without much context, so there’s no way of knowing how much of his comic book backstory showrunner Malcolm Spellman will use in the show. Agent has never been a villain exactly, but as a superhero he leaves a lot to be desired - there’s a limit to how much a reader can sympathize with how exploited he is by his government and traumatized he is by his experiences, simply because he’s such an unrepentant hard-headed jerk. Agent, a patriotic superhero who would do whatever the government asked him to without argument. The same government officials who’d appointed him Captain America in the first place faked his death, brainwashed him into forgetting that his parents were dead, and made him into the U.S. Eventually he resigned as Captain America so that Steve could come back, but things just got worse. The idea was that he seemed easier to browbeat into doing what they wanted than Steve “I could do this all day” Rogers, but Walker’s tenure as Cap was ignominious and tragic.Īfter his secret identity was revealed on live television, far-right terrorists assassinated his parents, which lead him into a mental breakdown in which he killed or maimed everyone associated with his outing and their murders. Right around then, Steve Rogers quit being Captain America in a huff ( which he does all the time), and just like in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, the US Government appointed John Walker to be the new Captain America. One downpayment on a back-alley superpowers program later, he got a job as the corporate-backed superhero the Super-Patriot, and spent much of his time arguing that (in the political environment of the mid-80s) he was a better representative of American values than Captain America. John Walker started out as an average American bro who grew up idolizing his veteran brother, but his own military service failed to give him the feeling of being a hero that he truly wanted. Agent? Image: Mark Gruenwald, Kieron Dwyer/Marvel Comics And Russell’s take on the character could certainly assume that role, too. In the comics, Marvel fans know Walker as U.S. Halfway through the 40-minute episode, he’s trying to get Sam and Bucky to fall into line. As established in the MCU, he was an actual captain in the army, he seems to possess top attributes in strength and intelligence (if not truly superheroic ones), and in the hands of actor Wyatt Russell, he’s more than a little smarmy. That man, for the United States government, is John Walker. We need someone to inspire us again, someone who can be a symbol for all of us.” We need a real person who embodies America’s greatest values. “While we love heroes who put their lives on the line to defend Earth,” says the announcer, “we also need a hero to defend this country. The guy is even wielding Steve Rogers’ shield, mere days after Sam gave a speech at the thing’s new Smithsonian exhibit. In the last scene of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier premiere, Sam Wilson and his sister Sarah watch as a US government official reveals a new Captain America. And if the comics are any indication - and with the remix-ready Marvel, they usually are - it could be mean trouble for Sam and Bucky. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier episode 2 digs a little deeper into the new hero’s backstory. But the premiere of the Disney Plus series ended with an important introduction: one John Walker aka the new Captain America. The first episode of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier took its time reminding us of all the things that have happened to Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes recently - a Civil War, a five-year nap, Captain America’s retirement, etc. 1/18/2024 0 Comments Flightgear downloadsA new flexible, 2D rendering system designed for complex instruments such as CDUs, MFDs, EICAS, HUDs and other glass cockpit interfaces. You can now select between summer and winter scenery in-sim. Boa Constrictor Care Levelīoth the Common boa and the Colombian boa make great pets for herpetoculturists. Argentine Boa ConstrictorsĪrgentine's have between 242 and 251 ventral scales, 29-30 interconnected dorsal blotches, and black and white peppering. There are very few of this type of boa in existence. Both the posterior body and tail blotches are black, thus the name. It has dark, interconnected saddling on a background color that ranges from yellow-brown to light powder-gray, with copious amounts of black throughout. This is a distinct morph (morph is variety created by breeders and not found in the wild) with a wide, central head stripe and black anterior and posterior facial markings. They have flatter-looking heads and a background color that ranges from gray and silver to a rich, dusky yellow. Short-tailed Boas have between 226 and 237 ventral scales, twenty-two dorsal blotches, and heavily speckled dark bellies. Red-Tailed Boas are the largest subspecies of boa and are arguably the most beautiful. They have black speckled bellies and defined red blotches on the surface of their posterior and tail, thus the name. This is the most popular boa subspecies, with a greater number of ventral scales (234–250) and blotches. There are quite a few different color and pattern varieties created by breeders, one of the most popular being the scarlet Blood Phase Boa. Common boas don’t have speckled bellies, but if they do they are lightly speckled and the pattern on the tail appears to be smudged. The common boas have less than 253 ventral (belly surface) scales and at least 21 dorsal (top surface) blotches (the area between the vent and the neck). They typically have blotches on their tails and scale patterns that look like leaves, ovals, diamonds, or circles.ĭepending on the subspecies, your boa can take on a variety of looks. Depending on the habitat they’re trying to blend into, boas can have a range of colors, including tan, green, red, and yellow. A boa’s small cloacal spurs on the sides of its vent (anus) are actually connected to said vestigial limbs!īoa constrictors have distinctive and varied markings. They have vestigial remnants of the pelvis and hind limbs of their lizard-like predecessors. Boa Constrictor Appearanceīoas are primitive snakes, just like pythons. In fact, the oldest recorded boa lived to be just over forty-three and lived at the Philadelphia Zoological Gardens. It’s quite normal for a boa constrictor to live for twenty to thirty years or more. Boa Constrictor Lifespanīoa constrictors are among the longest-lived snake species in the world. The largest boa constrictor on record is believed to have been 14 feet in length. Most captive-bred boa constrictors do not exceed a weight of 60 pounds, with most subspecies topping out at around 30 pounds. Male boa constrictors tend to be a little smaller than females. The average adult size ranges from 4 to 7 feet in length, with some individuals occasionally reaching 8 or 9 feet in length. Newborn boa constrictors range in length between 14 and 22 inches and weigh just 2 to 3 ounces. Boa Constrictor Sizeīoas are one of the few snakes that produce live births, versus eggs that need to be incubated. There are six subspecies currently recognized by all herpetologists, including the Common Boa Constrictor, Red-Tailed Boa Constrictor, Clouded Boa Constrictor, San Lucia Boa Constrictor, Short-Tailed Boa Constrictor, and Argentine Boa Constrictor. This is one of the few instances where an animal’s scientific name is the same as its common name. |
